Stability, Relief, and Getting You Back to Doing What You Love
Custom Knee Bracing at Active Balance Health Centre
Let’s be honest. Knees are a bit like that one unreliable friend. Most of the time they are great. But the moment they decide to act up, they really commit to the drama.
Whether it is instability, arthritis pain, or a stubborn meniscus injury, knee problems can quickly limit the activities that make life enjoyable. The good news is that custom knee bracing can be a powerful, non-surgical (or pre/post-surgical) option to restore confidence, reduce pain, and keep you moving.
If you are wondering whether a brace could help, here is everything you need to know.
First Things First: Diagnosis Comes Before Devices
A brace is only effective when it is matched to the right problem. That is why every custom knee brace fitting begins with a comprehensive assessment.
Your appointment includes:
- A detailed clinical exam
- Functional movement assessment
- Imaging if needed
- A personalized treatment plan
When appropriate, I can also order:
- X rays and diagnostic ultrasound (covered by Alberta Health Care)
- MRI imaging (private pay or eligible through health spending accounts)
- Requisitions for injection therapies when clinically indicated
If you are already working with a physician, physiotherapist, or another provider, we can collaborate seamlessly to make sure you get the right next step quickly. If you are not currently under care, we can get you started from square one.
The Best Part: The Financial Side is Often Surprisingly Friendly
Here is how it works:
Established Patients: book a 30-minute appointment with Dr. Taylor.
During this visit we will:
- Perform a focused biomechanical assessment
- Review existing imaging or order any necessary tests
- Determine whether a brace is appropriate
- Take precise measurements if you are a candidate
- Discuss your full treatment plan, including strengthening strategies, progressive rehab options, and evidence-based support recommendations
If a brace is indicated, it is typically ordered within the week. Once it arrives, you will be contacted to book your fitting appointment, where we will ensure proper alignment, comfort, and function and get you started using it confidently.
Both the assessment and fitting appointments are included in the cost of your brace.
New Patients: book a 60-minute initial assessment with Dr. Taylor.
This appointment is intentionally comprehensive. It includes:
- A detailed history and full biomechanical exam
- Thorough knee assessment and movement analysis
- Imaging requisitions if required
- Determination of brace candidacy
- A personalized care roadmap
This is not intended to be a “brace and go” service. If a brace is appropriate, you will also receive guidance on strengthening, progressive rehabilitation options, lifestyle strategies, and evidence-based support to optimize your recovery and long-term knee health.
You are always welcome to continue your care here, or we can collaborate seamlessly with your existing chiropractor, physiotherapist, or physician.
Once your brace arrives, we will schedule your fitting appointment, which is also included in the brace cost along.
Insurance Coverage
Most extended health insurance plans provide excellent coverage for custom knee braces, and many patients have the full cost reimbursed. As always, we recommend confirming the details of your individual policy.
If we perform an assessment and, together, determine that a brace may not be the best option for you, you will only be charged for the assessment or appointment which is billable under your chiropractic benefits.
Two Main Types of Knee Braces (And Who They Help Most)
1. Stabilizing Braces: For Active Knees That Need Support
These braces are designed for people with ligament injuries or instability, including:
- ACL, PCL, MCL, or LCL injuries
- Post surgical knees
- Athletes returning to sport
- Anyone who feels their knee “gives out”
Based on your history, exam findings, and imaging, the brace is designed to provide targeted support and restore confidence in movement.
2. Unloader Braces: For Arthritic Knees That Need Relief
For osteoarthritis, pain often comes from joint compression on one side of the knee.
An unloader brace works by:
- Applying gentle pressure to shift load away from the arthritic area
- Opening the joint space
- Reducing pain during walking and activity
For many patients, this can significantly delay or even avoid surgical intervention.
Why I Prescribe Don Joy Braces
Not all braces are created equal.
I use Don Joy custom braces because they combine durability with thoughtful design:
- Lightweight carbon fiber frames
- Strong titanium hinges
- Comfortable silicone condyle pads
- Modern, low-profile construction
- Excellent comfort for daily wear
- A company known for standing behind their products
Simply put, they are built to last and built to perform.
Not Everyone Needs Fully Custom
Depending on your condition, you may also be a candidate for:
- Semi-custom bracing
- High quality off the shelf Don Joy options
These can still be insurance covered and may be appropriate for certain injury types or activity levels.
Could You Be a Candidate?
You may benefit from a custom knee brace if you or someone you love has:
- A history of ligament injury
- Knee osteoarthritis
- A meniscus injury
- Ongoing knee instability
- Pain that limits activity
The key is determining the right solution for your specific knee, lifestyle, and goals.
Curious But Not Sure Yet?
That is completely normal.
You can book a free 15-minute meet and greet to ask questions, learn about your options, and see whether custom bracing might be a good fit.
If a brace is right for you, we will guide you through the entire process from diagnosis to fitting to follow up care.
And if it is not, you will still walk away with a clear plan for getting your knee back on track.
Your Knees Do a Lot for You. It Might Be Time to Return the Favor.
If you are ready to explore whether custom knee bracing could help you move better, hurt less, and stay active, booking an assessment is the first step.
Your future knees will thank you. Probably quietly. Knees are not big talkers.
