Custom Knee Braces

Knee Bracing at ABHC by Dr. Taylor Boyd

When your knee isn’t pulling its weight, every step can feel like a negotiation. Custom bracing can offer the stability, comfort, and confidence you’ve been missing especially when your knee needs more than the standard off-the-shelf support (although Dr. Taylor can help you with simpler options as well).

Who Can Benefit From a Custom Knee Brace

Many people do well with standard options, but sometimes your knee needs a tailored solution. Custom bracing is especially helpful for people with:

Moderate to advanced osteoarthritis
Ligament injuries or instability
Repetitive strain from physical work
High-demand sport or recreation
Rehabilitation after injury or surgery

If your goals include walking farther, hiking stronger, lifting confidently, or returning to the activities that make you feel like yourself, a custom brace can make that path smoother. Together we’ll decide if it’s the right option and build a plan that fits your body and your lifestyle.

What to Expect

Assessment

We begin with a full history and a detailed musculoskeletal exam to look at strength, mobility, stability, movement patterns, and which tissues are contributing to the problem. No guesswork.

Imaging Review

If you already have imaging, we’ll go through it together. If additional imaging is appropriate, Dr. Taylor can arrange it and help you understand what it means for your knee and your goals.

A Clear Diagnosis

Knowing exactly what’s driving your pain or instability lets us create a plan that’s precise, efficient, and tailored to you.

Treatment Plan

Once we have the full picture, we’ll map out next steps. That may include corrective exercises, soft-tissue therapy, activity modification, injection therapy (when appropriate), and of course, whether a custom brace will help you move comfortably and confidently.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much does a custom knee brace cost?

Custom braces range from $1500 to $1800 CAD depending on the model and features.
The good news: most patients have secondary insurance that covers the majority (and often all) of the cost. Dr. Taylor will make sure you have the proper forms, measurements, and documentation to submit a smooth claim and get reimbursed quickly.

  • How do I see Dr. Taylor? What appointment do I book?

For existing patients of Dr. Taylor or existing chiropractic patients at ABHC, please book a regular chiropractic treatment.  Please use the 30 minute treatment option so you have time to discuss if you are a candidate for a custom fitted knee brace.

For new chiropractic patients (even if you see other practitioners at ABHC), please book an Initial Chiropractic Assessment and note in the comments that you’d like to be assessment for a custom fitted knee brace.

  • How long does it take to receive my brace?

Once your measurements are taken, your custom brace typically arrives in 7 to 10 days.
If you’re eager to get moving sooner, there’s a 48-hour rush option available for a $70 charge.

  • What is the cost of the appointment?

If you’re a good candidate for a custom brace, the assessment and follow-up fitting are included in the cost of the brace itself. If your knee needs something other than a custom device, the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment plan are billed as a standard chiropractic initial visit ($120).

  • Do you offer off-the-shelf options?

Yes, off-the-shelf and semi-custom braces are also available. They can be a great fit for:
    • Early-stage osteoarthritis
    • Mild to moderate instability
    • Situations where a custom brace isn’t feasible right now

With an accurate diagnosis from Dr. Taylor, you may also be able to submit off-the-shelf bracing to your insurance for partial or full coverage.

  • How does the 3-point off-loading system actually work?

Think of it as smart engineering that redistributes pressure.
When one side of the knee joint is irritated from osteoarthritis, the brace uses a gentle three-point system to shift load toward the healthier compartment. Less pressure means less irritation. That often translates into smoother walking, easier stairs, longer outings, and a knee that feels more cooperative.

  • Do I need imaging before getting a brace?

Not always. Many people can be accurately assessed without new imaging.
If you already have X-rays or an MRI, Dr. Taylor will review them with you. If something is unclear or new imaging would change the plan, she can help arrange it. The goal is simple: make decisions based on good information, not guesswork.

  • Can I wear the brace for work, sport, or daily activity?

Yes! That’s exactly what it’s designed for. Your custom brace is built to handle real-world movement, whether that’s long workdays, hill training, skiing, soccer sidelines, or chasing the dog around the yard. Dr. Taylor will help you understand when to wear it, how often, and in which situations it will give you the biggest payoff.

  • What happens at the fitting appointment?

Once your brace arrives, you’ll come in for a quick but thorough fitting.
Dr. Taylor will check alignment, comfort, and movement patterns to make sure everything sits exactly where it should. You’ll learn how to put it on, take it off, adjust it, and keep it in good shape. You’ll leave knowing exactly how to use the brace so it supports you right from day one.
