Leona Ham

Pelvic Floor and Orthopedic Physiotherapist

Leona brings a sincere and empathetic approach to every patient interaction. As someone who values exercise and an active lifestyle, she understands the frustration that can come when pelvic health concerns or injuries limit your ability to participate in the activities you love. This passion for helping others stay active inspired her to create Finishline Physiotherapy, guided by the mission of “helping individuals maintain an active life.”

Leona is the longest-practicing Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist in Okotoks, with nearly 20 years of experience supporting women, men, and children with a wide range of pelvic health concerns. In addition to her pelvic health expertise, Leona also provides orthopedic physiotherapy care, helping patients recover from injury, improve function, and return to the activities that matter most to them. Finding a physiotherapist with extensive experience in both pelvic health and orthopedic rehabilitation is truly unique.

Leona is also a certified Complete Concussion Management™ Practitioner, offering evidence-informed care for both acute and persistent concussion symptoms. She provides baseline concussion testing for individuals and sports teams, as well as comprehensive concussion rehabilitation.

Always striving to expand the services available to her patients, Leona will soon be offering Pessary Management Care. Stay tuned for details on this exciting addition to her practice.

About Leona

Leona loves the outdoors and can be frequently running or walking with her dog around Okotoks. When she is not working or walking the dog, she is either dragging her husband to the mountains for a quick hike and growing food in her indoor or outdoor gardens. Leona actively coached and cheered on her children at basketball and volleyball while they were growing up and now gets to enjoy them as young adults.

Leona is the owner of Finishline Physiotherapy and has been seeing patients with pelvic floor dysfunction since 2009. Her Highlights include:

  1. Traveling to Germany with the Canadian Trampoline and Tumbling team for their world championships in 2003. This was a special moment as Karen Cockburn, one of Canada’s most decorated Olympians, won her first World Championship.
  2. Training the men’s hockey team that won Gold for Team Alberta at the 2003 Canada Games.
  3. Medical trainer with her son and daughter’s Hockey Team in the Okotoks Minor Hockey League.

Leona loves all the sports. Her greatest achievement in sports have been as a therapist, but she did play competitive badminton for Mount Royal College in the late 90’s and was awarded the team MVP during her 2nd year of competing.

Education

Leona Ham graduated from the University of Alberta in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy. Initially as a Certified Athletic Therapist, Leona began her career with a focus in Sports Physical Therapy. After experiencing her own pelvic health struggles, Leona realized her passion for women’s health. She has been seeing patients with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction since 2009. Leona was one of the original Pelvic Floor Physiotherapists in Okotoks prior to its growing “popularity” over the past number of years.

Leona has attended numerous conferences that focus on pelvic pain, pelvic medicine, and continence. She has spoken to various mom groups, doctor’s, the Primary Care Network nurses, female ministry groups in her community and has presented at the Alberta nurses neonatal education day. Leona does presentations on Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and Women’s Life Cycles at women’s conferences and other entrepreneurial events around Alberta. In addition to seeing patients one on one, she can also teach prenatal exercise classes and provide seminars to educate pregnant women on exercise, posture, movement mechanics, injury prevention and pelvic floor health during and after pregnancy. Leona also enjoys educating others. She consults to the University of Alberta Rehabilitation Medicine Satellite Campus Team in Calgary to help assistant teach in the Bridging Program. Leona has and continues to volunteer as an athletic therapist in a variety of sports and events in her community.

Over the past couple years, Leona has advanced her interest to encompass the perimenopause and menopause phase of a woman’s life. Leona has discovered how much the pelvic floor and the genitourinary structures it supports are impacted as this stage of its life. She has participated on a menopausal panel with local experts several times and spearheaded monthly interactive talks at ABHC. If you are reaching this stage (or in the middle of it), there are answers to your questions. Please reach out.
